Lecture: ”Castrum Novum – History and archaeology of a Roman colony”

Dr. Flavio Enei, the Director of the excavations and the museum Polo Museale Civico di Santa Marinella

The Finnish Institute in Rome organises, in collaboration with Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Helsinki, a conference that presents the progress and results of the excavations of Castrum Novum (new fort), the ancient Roman colony now located in the town of Santa Marinella, near Rome. The ‘Castrum’ is a place more unique than rare, where you can find a theatre and barracks still perfectly recognisable: in fact, it is being transformed from a simple site into an archaeological area.

In 2022 and 2023, The Finnish Institute in Rome has provided Finnish students with a possibility to participate in the excavations, offering them an opportunity to experience the culture of ancient Rome together with the modern Rome of today.

Program

  • Introduction by Dr. Patrizia Gambarotta (Director, Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Helsinki) and Prof. Mika Lavento (University of Helsinki, Member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation Institutum Romanum Finlandiae)
  • Lecture by Dr. Flavio Enei
  • Final discussion where the students involved in the excavations will be present.

Flavio Enei is an archeologist and the director of the Polo Museale Civico di Santa Marinella (Rome) as well as the founder of the Gruppo Archeologico del Territorio Cerite. Enei holds a degree in topography of Rome and ancient Italy from the University “La Sapienza” of Rome and is specialised in medieval archeology. In recent years, he has directed important excavations in the Castle of Santa Severa and the Pyrgi site, which led to the discovery, among other things, of the early Christian church of Santa Severa. Since 2010, he has promoted and directed excavations in the Roman colony of Castrum Novum.
